Cameron Diaz tops McAfee’s security threat list

Posted on

Cameron Diaz No. 1 on McAfee's security threat list. While Cameron Diaz is popular with many Americans for her roles in several blockbuster movies, she’s a hit with cybercriminals for another reason: her name draws in unsuspecting internet users.

According to antivirus security firm McAfee, nearly 10 percent of Diaz-related searches come up with malware-infested websites. If the term "screensavers" is added to the query, the risk doubles. Jessica Biel, who topped McAfee’s list of dangerous celebrities last year, dropped to third places.

"We’re not saying stay away from searching for celebrities like Cameron Diaz," Dave Marcus, McAfee’s director of security research, told ComputerWorld. "We’re saying be aware of the broad use of their names, and know that criminals are looking for a way to social engineer you, and this is the type of attack they’ll use."

As the security firm notes, Diaz’s high standing on the list is likely due to her roles in recent films. Many times, cybercriminals will use trending events to encourage internet users to click into their sites, where fraudsters can trick unknowing fans into downloading malware. The best way for people to avoid this is to keep their antivirus definitions up to date.

  1. It isn’t just happening with Cameron Diaz…gotta be careful with Megan Fox screensavers too! My norton virus blocked caught it. can’t be too careful though. just use trusted sites.

  2. Gang. Good thing I just got into Jessica Biel I guess. I mean… Cameron Diaz hasn’t been anything interesting since Mask.

  3. seriously? are old people searching or something? isn’t cameron diaz like 50? sheesh… target someone who’s actually young and attractive. maybe it’s because old people don’t know much about internet security… they’re a better target.
