A new study conducted by Enigma Software Group has bestowed the city of Atlanta, Georgia, with the "honor" of having the highest malware infection rate.
The software company maintains a real-time map displaying the infection rates of cities across the United States, reports PC World. While cities with massive populations, such as New York and Los Angeles, lead the total volume of malware, Atlanta had the highest infection rate per capita with respect to population.
The high infection rate may be because of the city’s relatively young makeup, with the average citizen five years younger than in the average American city. According to Enigma Software Group CEO Alvin Estevez, cities with younger residents tend to have more internet traffic, resulting in greater infection rates.
"Malware makers are becoming more and more sophisticated, and the risk they pose to your computer and your valuable personal information is growing," Estevez told PC World.
Email in particular is a common infection vessel for malware. TechHerald recently reported that as many as one in 10 email messages are infected with malware. Experts advise consumers to keep their antivirus definitions up to date to avoid security breaches.
I’m from Atlanta, and I’m not too surprised by this post. People use computers as well as they drive cars around here, Christ. People need to stop opening those stupid attachments. I mean c’mon people. This is basic stuff.
I’m actually surprised that the reasoning is because people are younger. In my experience, it’s the older generation that doesn’t know wth they’re doing.
