A new report from internet security firm Norton Antivirus indicates the majority of internet users have been attacked by cybercriminals, emphasizing the importance of using safer web practices.
According to the report, two-thirds of global consumers have fallen victim of cybercrime, ranging from stolen identities to credit card fraud. As ITPro notes, malware is the most serious threat, with 51 percent of internet users infected by viruses.
In most cases, instances of cybercrime cost victims $334 dollars to resolve their issues, and it took 28 days on average to address their cases. Almost one-third of victims indicated they never pursuedcomputer scam artists because the the issues were petty.
"Cybercriminals purposely steal small amounts to remain undetected, but all of these add up. If you fail to report a loss, you may actually be helping the criminal stay under the radar," said Adam Palmer, Norton’s lead security advisor.
The most effective way to avoid instances of cybercrime is to keep antivirus software up to date. Additionally, experts suggest not visiting suspicious websites.
Norton anti-virus is fine, but you’ll do just as well with Avast, which has blocked a good number of trojans from my computer. ANd it’s free!
Yeah, but who do I report to? I don’t have a local cyberpolice in my jurisdiction.
